World's Best Paralympians Star In Coventry Godiva Classic Meeting This Weekend

This weekend sees the staging of the third Coventry Godiva Classic at the Coventry athletics track and this year's event promises to be a showcase of wheelchair racing, with 26 London Paralympic stars due to compete.
Among them will be double Paralympic champion Hannah Cockcroft who will take part alongside a host of other internationals, using the competition as a warm up for this month's Commonwealth Games.
Event organiser and Coach, Job King, said of the event:
“Our first Classic was in the lead up to the London 2012, a small, but successful evening competition that helped forge its reputation for fast times and a friendly welcome.
Just two years on it is a privilege to host some of the world’s finest Wheelchair athletes – especially the Australian Commonwealth Games team – plus athletes from Holland, USA, Wales, Northern Ireland, Cornwall and the North East.

"The meet isn’t just Paralympic sport, but a ‘Parallel Success’ competition embracing Godiva Kids, Club Sprinters, Midland & Warwickshire 3000m Championships....lot’s going on, all thanks to support from officials and volunteers who I hope will enjoy the experience as much as the athletes!”

Carrying on the legacy of London 2012, the Godiva Classic meeting is designed to provides an opportunity for local young athletes to experience their first competition and recognise the benefits of the coaching and equipment provided by Coventry Godiva Harriers.
Alongside the Godiva Kids competition the weekend will also feature a complete line-up of Under 11 wheelchair racers from across the UK.

The Coventry club is now recognised as one of the four UK centres for wheelchair racing excellence, and on Saturday 19th July, the competition will also see the opening of its dedicated wheelchair training and storage centre.  Thanks to a series of charitable donations, the club will take possession of five new racing chairs specially modified to allow local youngsters to trial the sport for the first time.

The competition starts on Saturday 19 July between 17:00 – 20:00 and continues on Sunday 20 July between 10:00 – 15:00.  Entrance to the track is free with further details on the Coventry Godiva Harriers club website - http://www.coventry-godiva-harriers.org.uk/classic.htm.
