Provisional results suggest a number of impressive performances from Coventry & Warwickshire runners in the Midland Women's Cross Country League.
The race was held alongside the Birmingham Men's League at Leamington's Newbold Comyn, resulting in the spectacular site of more than 1000 senior runners competing over a challenging and varied cross country course.
The women's race provided a series of local highlights, ranging from three Coventry based athletes filling the three top places in Frances Briscoe (Coventry Godiva), Charlotte Taylor (University of Warwick) and GB 800 international Rowena Cole (Godiva), through to the inspiring fact that one third of the field for this Midland event was drawn from fifteen Warwickshire clubs.
The strong local turnout helped ensure that local clubs dominated the first round of team competition. In the senior competition, Coventry Godiva finished second, while in the Masters Women’s team competition six local clubs finished well, with Stratford upon Avon AC (2nd), Rugby & Northampton (3rd), Godiva (4th), Nuneaton (5th), Knowle & Dorridge (6th) and Leamington C & AC (7th). Equally commendable were the large turns outs from Sphinx, Kenilworth Runners, Massey Runners and Northbrook. If maintained, this should soon see them rise up the league standings.
The next women's fixture will take place on 1 December, alongside the Men's Birmingham League Division 3 fixture, at Burbage Common, Hinckley.
