The increasingly popular "Coombe 8" organised by Sphinx Athletics Club was run on Sunday (25th) over an extremely testing 8 mile multi-terrain course. Two days of persistent rain had made the underfoot conditions wet, muddy and slippery. With standing water in many parts of the twisting route around the paths and fields of Coombe Abbey Country Park near Coventry. A few last minute course adjustments were required to make the race safe and enjoyable for all the 255 competitors.
Winners: Andrew Siggers and Myshola Kirkham
with Avneet Jaspal of Pailton Engineering
The conditions didn’t impact on the race winner, Andrew Siggers of Kenilworth Runners who was first over the line in a time of 45:48. Andrew was almost 30 seconds ahead of 2nd placed Pete Hawkins (46:17), with Patrick Roddy also from Kenilworth Runners (47:09) in third.
In the Ladies race first place went to defending champion Myshola Kirkham of Coventry Godiva Harriers who finished in 54:56 with Zara Blower (Leamington C &AC) and Jenny Spillane (Spa Striders) finishing second and third in 56:31 and 58:15 respectively.
The race is now a popular event on the West Midlands running calendar and is consistently sold out before the date of the race. The Club expressed their gratitude to Coombe Country Park and Coventry City Council for the use of the Park and Coventry Runner for their continued sponsorship of the race.
The trophies for the winners of the men's race and women's race were donated by local company, Pailton Engineering, and were presented by company representative, Avneet Jaspal.
