This Saturday sees the first major cross-country fixture of the 2012/13 season, when as many as 1000 club runners, many of them local, take part in the first races in the Birmingham Mens Cross Country League and Midland Women's Cross Country League.
The Birmingham and District Invitation Cross Country League was formed in 1925 when a few Birmingham based athletics enthusiasts resolved to form a local cross country league. From small beginnings, with just 6 Clubs, the league has grown considerably, expanding into 3 divisions with over 50 clubs from the Birmingham area, Warwickshire and beyond.
The purpose of the Birmingham League is to actively encourage and promote cross country running and it has the reputation of being one of the most competitive and highest quality cross country leagues in the country.
The highlight of the League's year is its first fixture, which traditionally takes place at the start of November and where the three divisions of the League come together and compete but also the Midland Womens Cross Country league also stages its first race. The result is a fine spectacle of cross country running, for competitors and spectators alike.
