Coventry & Warwickshire's Olympic and Paralympic Athletes

With London 2012 in full swing and the Olympics athletics programme  about to start, it seems opportune to remember Coventry and Warwickshire's Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Lets hope that London 2012 inspires many, many more. Our thanks to Dave Dix for the research involved in the following:

Marlon Devonish
Olympic Games competed in : 2000 Sydney - 200m (quarter final), 4x100m (heats) 2004 Athens - 4x100m (Gold) 2008 Beijing - 200m (semi final), 4x100m (heats) 
Other sporting achievements : 15 major medals at Olympic, European and Commonwealth Games
Marlon Devonish born on 1 June 1976 in Coventry. Attended Caludon Castle School. Lives and trains in West London.

Bob Matthews MBE
Sport : Goal Ball / Athletics
Paralympic Games competed in : 1980 Arnhem - Goal Ball 1984 New York - 800m (Gold), 1500m (Gold), 5000m (Gold) 1988 Seoul - 800m (Gold), 1500m (Gold), 5000m (Gold) 1992 Barcelona - 800m (Silver), 1500m (Bronze), 5000m (Gold) 1996 Atlanta - 1500m (Silver) 2000 Sydney - 5000m (Silver), 10,000m (Silver), Marathon (Gold) 2004 Athens - 5000m (6th), 10,000m (5th)
Other sporting achievements : Bob set 22 world records in addition to his 13 Paralympian medals, also winning 6 World Championships Golds and 15 European Golds during his athletics career. 
Robert Matthews born 26 May 1961 a long time resident of Leamington Spa and a member of Leamington C & AC. Received his MBE in 1987 the first Paralympian to receive this honour. Awarded an honorary MA from Warwick University in 2001.
Life since being an Olympian : Emigrated to New Zealand in 2006, now working as a motivational speaker and massage therapist.

Andy Hart
Olympic Games competed in : 2000 Sydney - 800m (heats)
Andrew “Andy” Hart born 13 September, 1969 in Warwick. Initially a member of Leamington AC and then Coventry Godiva Harriers.
Life since being an Olympian : School teacher

Katharine Merry
Olympic Games competed in : 1996 Atlanta - 200m (quarter final), 4x100m (8th) 2000 Sydney - 400m (Bronze), 4x400 (5th)
Other sporting achievements : European Championships 1998 3rd in 4x400m
Born in Dunchurch on 21 September, 1974 and educated in Rugby. Join Birchfield Harriers and trained in the latter part of her career in Cardiff.
Life since being an Olympian : Presenter and Media work covering Sport and Health & Fitness

Joanne Wise
Olympic Games competed in : 1992 Barcelona - Long Jump (qualifier) 2000 Sydney - Long Jump (12th) (after disqualification of Marion Jones for drugs)
Other sporting achievements : 1998 Commonwealth Games, Gold
Joanne Wise born in Solihull on 15 March, 1971. Pupil at Stratford Grammar School and a member of Coventry Godiva Harriers.

Lorraine Strain (nee Baker)
Olympic Games competed in : 1984 Los Angeles - 800m (5th) 1992 Barcelona - 800m (semi-finals)
Other sporting achievements : 1986 Commonwealth 800m Bronze
Lorraine Baker born in Ipswich on 9 April, 1964. Moved to Coventry, educated and trained during her athletics career in the City.

Maxine Baker (nee Newman)
Games competed in : 1992 Barcelona - 1500m (heats)
Maxine Newman born in Leicestershire on 15 December 1970. Maxine joined Coventry Godiva Harriers prior to the 1992 Olympics to be coached by Norma Pugh.

Dave Long
Olympic Games competed in : 1988 Seoul - Marathon (21st) 1992 Barcelona - Marathon (31st)
Other sporting achievements : 4th place in London Marathon in a personal best of 2:10.30
David “Dave” Long born in Coventry on 21 November 1960, attended Binley Park School.  A member of Massey Ferguson AC and Coventry Godiva Harriers.

Andrew Penn
Olympic Games competed in : 1992 Barcelona - 20km walk (23rd)
Andrew “Andy” Shaun Penn born Nuneaton 31 March, 1967. A member of Nuneaton Harriers and Coventry Walking Club.

Richard Moreton

Paralympic Games competed in : 1998 Seoul - 100m, 200m & 4 x 100m 1992 Barcelona - Team GB Football Team
Lives in Whitnash, Leamington Spa and is a member of Coventry Godiva Harriers.

Angela Bailey

Angela Bailey born in Coventry on the 28 February, 1962. Joined Coventry Godiva Harriers and holds the club 100 meter record for under 13. Emigrated to Canada as a teenager.

Judy Simpson (nee Livermore)
Olympic Games competed in : 1980 Moscow - Pentathlon (13th) 1984 Los Angeles - High Jump (qualifying), Heptathlon (5th) 1988 Seoul - Heptathlon
Other sporting achievements : Commonwealth Games Heptathlon Silver in 1982, Commonwealth Games Heptathlon Gold in 1986, Commonwealth Games Heptathlon Bronze in 1990
Judith Earline Veronica Simpson (nee Livermore) born in Kingston, Jamaica on 14 November 1960. Educated and lived in Rugby before marriage and then moved to Birmingham.
Life since being an Olympian : Appeared in TV show Gladiators in the 1990s as Nightshade

Anthony Hamilton
Paralympic Games competed in : 1988 Seoul - 1500m B3 (Gold), 800m B3 (Gold), 400m 1992 Barcelona - 1500m B3 (Bronze), 800m B3, 400m
Anthony Hamilton born on 18 February, a student at Exhall Grange School.

David Moorcroft OBE
Olympic Games competed in : 1976 Montreal - 1500m (7th) 1980 Moscow - 5000 (semi final) 1984 Los Angeles - 5000m (14th)
Other sporting achievements : World Record Holder for 5000m in 1982, Commonwealth Games 1500m Gold in 1978, Commonwealth Games 5000m Gold in 1982
David Robert Moorcroft born in Coventry on 10 April, 1953; attended Woodlands School, Coventry. A member of Coventry Godiva Harriers since 1964 and now President of the club.
Life since being an Olympian : David was Chief Executive of the Coventry Sports Foundation from 1981 to 1995 and remains a trustee. Chief Executive of UK Athletics from 1997 until 2006. Now founding partner of Pointfourone Sports Consultancy

Ian Richards

Ian William Richards born 12 April 1948 in Stockport. A member of Coventry Godiva Harriers.

Sheila Carey (nee Taylor)
Olympic Games competed in : 1968 Mexico - 800m (4th) 1972 Munich - 1500m (5th)
Sheila Janet Taylor born Coventry 12 August 1946. A member of Coventry Godiva Harriers.

Colin Kirkham
Olympic Games competed in : 1972 Munich - Marathon (20th)
Colin Kirkham born on 30 October, 1944. Moved to the area as a school teacher joining Coventry Godiva Harriers and has remained in the area.

Bill Adcocks
Olympic Games competed in : 1968 Mexico - Marathon (5th)
Other sporting achievements : Commonwealth Games Marathon Silver in 1966. Won International races in East Germany, Japan and Greece setting European and British bests. Marathon personal best 2:10.48 
William “Bill” Arthur Adcocks born in Coventry on 11 November, 1941; attended Woodlands School, Coventry. Life long member of Coventry Godiva Harriers and secretary of the club since 1990. During his international athletics career Bill was a self employed gas fitter and then a full time college lecturer at the Coventry Technical College.
Life since being an Olympian : Information Officer at UK:Athletics 1995 – 2006, Past President of the English Cross Country Association.

Dick Taylor
Olympic Games competed in : 1968 Mexico - 5000m (heats)
Other sporting achievements : 1970 Commonwealth Games 10,000m 3rd, Twice National Cross Country Championship
Richard George “Dick” Taylor born on 03 January 1945 in Coventry where he has lived all his life. A member of Coventry Godiva Harriers and former Chairman.

John Edgington
Olympic Games competed in : 1964 Toyko 20km Walk (8th)
John William Edgington born on 5 April 1936. A school pupil at Broadway Sec Mod School and qualified as a design draughtsman. A member of Coventry Godiva Harriers. Awarded the GSM while serving in Malaya.

Basil Heatley
Olympic Games competed in : 1964 Tokyo (Silver)
Basil Benjamin Heatley born in Kenilworth on 25 December 1933. A pupil at King Henry VIII school and a member of Coventry Godiva Harriers.
Other sporting achievements : Held World Best for Marathon in 1964, Multiple British and International Cross Country Championships.

Brian Kilby
Olympic Games competed in : 1960 Rome (24th, Marathon) 1964 Tokyo (4th, Marathon)
Other sporting achievements : European Marathon Champion 1962, Commonwealth Marathon Champion 1962
Brian Leonard Kilby born in Coventry on 26 February, 1938. A member of Coventry Godiva Harriers.

Joe West
Olympic Games competed in : 1952 Helsinki - (49th, Marathon)
Joseph West born in Dublin on 4 December 1924. A member of Coventry Godiva Harriers.

Frank Mulvihill
National Olympic Committee : Ireland
Olympic Games competed in : 1948 London - (26th, Marathon)
Frank Patrick “Paddy” Mulvihill born 8 December 1915.

Stan Ashby
Olympic Games competed in : 1928 Amsterdam (1500 heats)
Other sporting acheivements : He made his international début on the eve of his 20th birthday and was, at the time, the youngest-ever athlete to represent Great Britain in the 1500m/mile.
Born in Coventry on 31 July, 1907. A member of Coventry Godiva Harriers.
