For many club runners the road relay season is a favourite time of year. Traditionally marking the end of the Winter cross country-season, relay racing serves as an excellent warm up to Summer road and track racing.
And so it was that local teams turned out in force force on Saturday at Birmingham's Sutton Park for the Midland Road Relays. Massey Runners made a return to the event after a few years absence and Knowle and Dorridge RC demonstrated their ongoing development as a club, with presence in both men's and women's races. Also represented were Coventry Godiva, who finished 5th in both the men's and master's (vet's) races, Northbrook, Sphinx, Leamington, Rugby and Northampton and Stratford AC. With the Virgin London Marathon now just over two weeks away, those competing will be tapering their training and aiming to get to the start line feeling refreshed but without the sluggishness that can come from suddenly and drastically reducing activity. The key to this is to cut out the volume, pick up the tempo a little on shorter runs and get plenty of rest. It's also important in the final two weeks to try and avoid picking up a cold, so avoid those with them and wash hands as often as possible.
One familiar name in this year's London Marathon will be Coventry Olympian Dave Long.
Finally, a reminder that the Massey Runners Easter 5 Mile Road Race takes place this Sunday 8th April 2012 at 11am at the War Memorial Park in Coventry.
The race is sponsored by Phillips and Becker Accountants and Coventry Runner. Further details are at http://masseyrunners.org.uk
